What are Break Sticks
A break stick is a solid wedge-shaped tool that's used to give leverage to open a "bite and hold" dog's jaw. It's an efficient resource that can be used to "break" the bite, helping to prevent injury to dogs and people. They are a suggested tool to keep on hand in case of an emergency for Pit Bull owners, rescue organizations, shelters, and dog trainers or those with bully breeds that are in settings where unknown dogs interact.
Keep in mind
Not all pit bulls are aggressive toward other dogs. But because the breed has a somewhat higher tendency for dog aggression, break sticks are useful tools to have in a multi-dog household, along with rescues, shelters and trainers who may have a high volume of Pit Bull type dogs in their facilities. Please read the following guidelines before attempting to break up a fight using a break stick.
Why responsible owners and caretakers should consider having a break stick?
Pit Bulls are strong and agile dogs. The majority of other dog breeds bite erratically and blindly - snapping, biting, and releasing. Pit Bulls as with all terrier breeds, tend to bite and hold when fighting. If a dog is biting and releasing a break-stick will not be of any use, but if a dog has a grip and won’t let go a break-stick can facilitate a break. They have been bred and are hard-wired for this behavior, just like retrievers "retrieve" or herders "herd" it's not something that can be trained or loved away.
This is not special pit bull behavior; it is strength, determination, and tenacity, which is a typical terrier behavior. Pit Bulls have been bred for hundreds of years to be bite and hold dogs, beginning with bull-baiting, hog hunting, and dogfighting. They have been bred to ignore the pain, and the submission signals of other dogs, even though they absolutely feel it. This is part of the reason why some become other-dog aggressive. (please note, dog aggression does not go hand in hand with human aggression, they are two completely separate behavioral traits)
Many people and organizations, ignore the history or deny the history and think it will never happen and many times it doesn't, but it only takes one time for it to be a disaster, and even scarier than fights is not being able to stop them or break them up. It can be difficult to get them to release another dog once they have a "hold". As the name suggests, a break stick is designed to break this determined terrier hold. This is the safest, easiest, and most effective way to stop a fight.
With Pit Bull breeds, the break stick is one of the quickest and safest ways to break up a fight. Keep calm, straddle your dog, grab the collar with one hand, and insert the break stick in the opening behind the molars, and twist like a motorcycle handle. The leverage will cause them to adjust their bite onto the stick allowing you to pull them away so that you can regain control. This is of course much easier with two people, but one person can accomplish this by tying one of the dogs to a stable object if need be.
